Technical Help

I Forgot My Username and/or Password

You can use the Forgot Password screen to retrieve BOTH your username and password.

Your password is case sensitive, that is, you must use the same capitalization to log-in that you gave when you registered.  For example, "PASSWORD" is not the same as "password".

The Neighborhood does not permit members to have multiple usernames assigned to a single email address.

I Can't Access the Chat Rooms

In order to access the chat software in the Neighborhood, you must have Java software installed in your internet browser.

First, make sure that you are actually logged in.   If you are logged-in, you should be able to read articles in the Neighborhood.  If you still cannot access the chat room, perform these steps:

  • Go to http://www.java.com/en/index.jsp

  • Click the "Get It Now" button on the download panel.

  • Click the download button next to your operating system. When prompted on the File Download button, click Open.

  • If you are presented with a dialog to trust content from Sun Microsystem and/or Java, click Yes.

    (Note:
If you need more detailed instructions on how to install Java on your PC, instead of clicking the download button, click the Instructions link.)

  • Shut down and restart your computer.

  • Open you internet browser.

  • Go to "Tools" then "Internet Options" then "Advanced."

  • Scroll down to the "Java (Sun)" item.

  • Click box next to the "Use Java 2" for <applet>" item.

Note: You must have administrative or power user rights to install software on the computer you are using.  Usually home users have this right automatically configured, but corporate users usually do not.

If you are unsure, contact your IT help desk, or customer support for assistance installing the Java Runtime.

Popup/Ad-Block/Firewalls/Antivirus Software Notes:

  • Pop-up blocking, Ad blocking, Virus Blocking, and Firewall software may prevent you from installing Java on your PC.

  • If you run any of these types of software, you should configure these programs to allow downloads and installations from java.com.

  • Usually, (but not always) this class of software will present an alert or dialog box letting you know that the site is blocked, or prompt you to allow the installation.

  • If the download won't start you should investigate any of these software filters to make they are configured to allow downloads and installations from java.com.

If you continue to have difficulty accessing the chat rooms, follow these steps:

  • When you visit the chat page a "Coffee Mug" icon will appear by your clock in the Windows "Start" bar.

  • Right click on the "Coffee Mug" and select the "Control Panel" option in the menu.

  • Once the Control Panel winodw opens click on the "Cache" tab.

  • Uncheck the "Enable Caching" check box. Then click Apply or OK button.

  • Close the Control Panel window.

  • Close web browser and open a new web browser then visit the chat page again.
